The National Park of Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise was opened in Pescasseroli (AQ) September 9, 1922, while the body of the same name was established November 25, 1921. The first protected area was set up by the town of Opi in Val Fondillo Camosciara October 2, 1921 and was given to the “Pro et montibus Sylvis Association” until January 17, 1923, when the National Park obtained the management of this protected area. On 25 March 1923 by Royal Decree, the Administrative Commission of the Park was established.
The park is included mostly (3/4 approximately) in the province of Aquila in Abruzzo, and the rest in the provinces of Frosinone in Lazio and Isernia in Molise. The headquarter is located in Pescasseroli. The National Park of Abruzzo, together with the Gran Paradiso National Park, is the oldest park in Italy and is known in the whole Country for its role in the preservation of some of the most important Italian animal species, such as wolf, Marsicano brown bear and Abruzzo chamois, and for the first and several initiatives to modernize and spread the protection of the environment. It is covered with beech woods for about two thirds of its surface.
It spreads mainly in mountain areas, where it is not practicable the cultivation of vines and olive trees, and encroaches the valleys Giovenco and Comino.
